Our representative meets you at Bagdogra Airport or NJP Railway Station and transfers you to your hotel in Gangtok. The drive covers roughly 125 km along NH-10 beside the Teesta River and takes 4.5 to 5 hours in normal conditions — allow longer during monsoon or peak-season traffic at Rangpo.
After check-in, the evening is yours. Most guests walk the pedestrian-only MG Marg, browse Lall Market, or take the Gangtok Ropeway for a view over the town.
Permit note: Your Tsomgo Lake permit for Day 2 is processed this evening. We collect your ID and photographs on arrival — permits for restricted areas are issued the day before travel and cannot be arranged on the spot.
After breakfast, we drive east from Gangtok towards the Indo-China border road. Tsomgo (Changu) Lake sits about 40 km away at roughly 12,300 ft — a glacial lake that stays frozen through much of winter and mirrors the surrounding ridges in spring and autumn. Yak rides and hot drinks are available lakeside.
We continue a short distance to New Baba Mandir, the memorial shrine to Baba Harbhajan Singh maintained by the Indian Army, before returning to Gangtok by evening.

Optional add-on — Nathu La Pass: Nathu La can be added to this day for Indian nationals only, subject to a separate permit and a daily vehicle cap. Foreign nationals, including OCI/PIO cardholders, are not permitted. The pass is closed on certain weekdays and the army only admits vehicles in the morning window, so if you want Nathu La we leave Gangtok by 6:30–7:00 AM and reverse the order: Nathu La first, then Baba Mandir, then Tsomgo on the way back. Tell us at the time of booking — this cannot be added on the day.
We start early after breakfast. The drive to Lachung (about 8,600 ft) now runs via the rebuilt North Sikkim road and the Sanklang bridge, and realistically takes 7 to 8 hours including stops — this is a full travel day, not a half-day transfer.
En route you stop at Tashi View Point just outside Gangtok, Singhik View Point near Mangan for the Kanchenjunga panorama, and the roadside Bhim Nala Waterfall (locally called Amitabh Bachchan Falls) past Chungthang. You reach Lachung by late afternoon and check into your hotel for the evening.

Why the early start: North Sikkim has fixed checkpost cut-off times and no night driving is permitted. Departures after mid-morning risk not clearing the checkposts before they close.
The earliest start of the trip. We drive up to Yumthang Valley (about 11,800 ft), the Valley of Flowers, where the Teesta runs through open alpine meadow and hot springs sit across a footbridge. Rhododendrons carpet the slopes from late March through May.
Conditions permitting, we continue to Zero Point (Yumesamdong) at roughly 15,300 ft — the last point civilian vehicles are allowed, where three rivers meet and snow lingers most of the year. This leg needs a separate permit and is weather-dependent; the road closes without notice during snowfall.
We return to Lachung, visit Lachung Monastery, take an early lunch, and depart for Gangtok by early afternoon to clear the checkposts in time. Arrival in Gangtok is in the evening.

Altitude advisory: Zero Point crosses 15,000 ft with no medical facilities and thin oxygen. It is not advisable for guests with cardiac or respiratory conditions, pregnant women, or very young children. Carry heavy woollens year-round. Zero Point is frequently inaccessible from late December through February due to snow.
Pace note: This is the longest day of the tour. If you would rather not do a high-altitude excursion and a 7-hour drive on the same day, we recommend our 6-day version with a second night in Lachung — ask us and we will quote it.
After breakfast, we drive you back to Bagdogra Airport or NJP Railway Station. Please keep at least 5 hours in hand before your flight or train; NH-10 is a mountain highway and delays are common. We are happy to schedule an early departure if you have a morning flight.
